Psychiatric Treatment Options for Teens

Like adults, many adolescents suffer from mental illnesses ranging from severe depression to personality disorders and other psychiatric problems. Some may become defiant, withdrawn or even suicidal. These issues can throw young lives into turmoil, but help is available at Peachford Hospital. Our adolescent treatment programs are geared toward helping adolescents increase self-esteem and take responsibility for their behavior without turning to drugs or alcohol for help.

As a facility and a group of experienced behavioral health professionals, Peachford Hospital’s priority is to provide a restorative and therapeutic environment that supports teens on the road to mental and physical recovery. Our full continuum of psychiatric programs, for patients ages 13 to 18, helps teens and families address a number of issues, such as depression, anxiety, behavioral issues, attention deficit issues and other personality disorders and mental health problems.

Our continuum of care offers inpatient and outpatient options, including:

  • Acute Inpatient
  • Partial Hospitalization
  • Intensive Outpatient
  • Individual Outpatient (Per Client)
  • Substance Abuse Treatment

TREATMENT COMPONENTS

The treatment process begins with a comprehensive evaluation to help diagnose any underlying medical issues. An individualized care plan is created to address each patient’s special needs. Treatment is administered by a multidisciplinary, psychiatrist-led team that may include nurses, social workers, activity therapists, internal medicine physicians, teachers, substance abuse counselors and program specialists. When outpatient therapy is deemed to be the most effective course of treatment, Peachford Hospital provides a variety of outpatient services as well as a referral network to area health professionals.

Because psychiatric problems may be complicated by a coexisting substance abuse problem, Peachford provides specialized treatment for adolescents with dual diagnosis issues. Substance abuse treatment follows the 12-Step philosophy.

Therapeutic components may include:

  • Family therapy
  • Group therapy
  • Drug and alcohol education
  • Accredited school program
  • Recreational therapy
  • Activity therapy
  • Pet therapy
  • Medication education
  • Pharmacotherapy

FAMILY PARTICIPATION

Treatment plans focus on attainable short-term and long-term goals established with input from the teen’s family and referring professionals. Family participation is a vital component of adolescent treatment at Peachford Hospital to promote understanding and effective communication. Resources like our Parenting Classes educate and support parents walking through this process. Upon successful completion of treatment, a follow-up aftercare program is available at no charge to help families support the continued rehabilitation and wellness of their loved one.
